How Much Does Bluestone Patio Cost to Install?

Across the country, the average cost of a bluestone patio is $27 to $35 per square foot. A medium-sized 10′ x 10′ dining patio built with bluestone patio pavers costs approximately $2,700–$3,500, depending on the bluestone’s quality.

While pavers are easier to lay, irregular bluestone shapes are versatile and can be used anywhere in your landscape design—sidewalks, walkways, paths, etc. Cut stone can be the most expensive option over buying bluestone pavers or tile, and can bring the material and installation total to as much as $80/sq ft.

Bluestone Patio

Marble and granite are single stones, whereas bluestone is a category with many members. In addition to its durability and hard-wearing nature, bluestone is ideal for applications in both interior and outdoor environments, making it a very attractive solution for both exterior and interior applications. Installing a bluestone patio can also increase the value of your home when it comes time to sell.

FAQs For Bluestone Patio

Bluestone is most often used in exterior projects, including landscaping projects. We’ve seen many clients use bluestone to create meandering and charming garden pathways through their properties, and it’s even been used to achieve a more formal and modern look in exterior walkways, porches, and patio etc.

A natural stone like bluestone tends to cost more than other pavers because of the cost of quarrying, as well as availability. Because bluestone is highly desirable and only comes from a few regions, it is often priced at a premium.

One of the best things about bluestone is its durability in any climate. It can last as long as 100 years if it’s taken care of properly, so you can rest assured that your bluestone paving stones will last for many years to come.

One major challenge with using bluestone for a pool deck is that it tends to get hot. It isn’t just the stone’s dark color that contributes to the retention of heat, it’s something known as specific heat – some materials absorb and retain heat better, and bluestone is one of them.

Bluestone is light to dark greyish-blue in color, depending on the depth at which it is quarried. The deeper it is quarried, the more rich the color. It is also quite dense, which makes it durable and resistant to cracking.

Bluestone Patio Maintenance

Although bluestone holds up exceptionally well to heavy traffic, it is a porous stone and can absorb water. You’ll need to seal it once installed.

Bluestone Patio

Sealer/sealant – Because bluestone contains lime, you shouldn’t use harsh sealants on it because they can damage the minerals. A natural finish sealant will protect the patio for 3–4 years, and a good warranty will cover any of your maintenance needs.

Sealants will be applied in thin coats with a roller or sprayer to allow the concrete to expand and allow moisture to escape. While the sealer itself is approx. $0.55/sqft, the labor will cost about $30/hour.

Sealer maintenance – A good sealant can protect the patio from food stains, furniture scratches, and mold or mold for many years; cleaning is simple—just wash with a soft cloth and warm soapy water. Reapply sealer every 3–4 years.

Bluestone Patio Costs by Type

Bluestone is sold in several formats to suit a range of applications and uses—including giving patios and surrounding areas an authentic, natural appearance. In addition to precise cut stone, bluestone is also available in irregular shapes and sizes, which are leftovers of larger pieces that are broken during the quarrying process. If you want to choose a type of bluestone that will suit your project, irregular bluestone is the least expensive by at least $4 per square foot. Each format is available in a range of finishes including tumbled, thermaled, and natural cleft to best suit the intended application.
