How Much Sand Under Pavers?
To achieve a firm base from the beginning, you must ensure you have the correct depth of sand under the pavers. We recommend allowing a depth of at least 30Â mm of loose sand. The pavers will pack down to about 20-25 mm depending on how you pack them, allowing for drainage without shifting.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
The amount of sand you use can make or break your paver installation, so it’s best that you use no more than the recommended 1 inch. Here’s why: A sand layer that is too thick can create waves in your patio during the installation. Pressing pavers into a thick sand bed may result in misalignment and a messy look.

Before you begin laying pavers, prepare the ground. Ensure you have a root and rubble free compatible sand sub-base of at least 50mm thick. The sub-base should be roughly levelled and damped down before tamping down firmly with a hand or mechanical compactor.

Laying Pavers Without Sand
While some people install pavers without sand, they do so at their peril. Laying pavers without a gravel base or without other small stabilizing materials means the bricks will sink and shift over time. When the bricks shift or sink, they create an uneven surface that poses a tripping hazard.

Pavers come in various shapes and hues and make long-lasting paths and patios. Although installing them seems complicated, the homeowner can usually accomplish the task in a weekend or two. According to Oregon State University Extension, the key to a durable surface is to start with a strong foundation that includes several inches of rock and sand.
Amount
Plan on spreading about 1 inch (2.54 cm) of sand beneath the pavers, says Western Interlock. You’ll also use it to fill the gaps between them. The sand should be spread over a 4- to 12-inch layer of crushed stone, which has been tamped into place. Once the sand is installed, moisten it and tamp it into place, so it won’t settle further. The amount of stone and sand you use depends on the type of soil and how much wear the pavers will receive.
Use more stone and sand in soft clay soils than you would in hard or sandy soils. A driveway covered with pavers needs a much deeper sub-surface than paths that get only light foot traffic.
Type
Use coarse sand for installing pavers. In addition to creating a firm, solid surface to fit the pavers on, the sand is used to smooth and level the rocks. Coarse sand is less expensive than the fine sand used for sandboxes, making it an economical and practical choice for this application.

How to Calculate Paver Sand
Creating a patio or hard parking area is a popular way to extend your living space and add value to your property. Pavers, whether stone or concrete, must be supported by solid foundations, the final layer of which is paving sand. For a paving project, determining the amount of sand needed involves determining the area of the paving, and then estimating how many cubic feet of sand is needed to cover the area in a layer of one inch (2.54 cm).
Step 1
Calculate the area of the paving project, and thus the area requiring sand. For rectangular paving areas, multiply the length by the width to find the area. For right-angle triangles, multiply the height by half the base. For example, the surface area of a patio 10 feet (ca. 3 m) long by 6 feet (1.83 m) wide is 10×6, or 60 square feet (5.57 m²).
Step 2
Calculate the volume of sand by multiplying the surface area by the depth of the sand layer. The recommended depth of sand for laying pavers is 1 inch (2.54 cm). One inch equals 1/12 of a foot, so divide the square footage by 12 to find the cubic feet of sand needed. For example, a 60-square-foot patio requires 5 cubic feet (0.14 m³) of sand because 60/12 = 5.
Step 3
Convert cubic feet to cubic yards for large volumes of sand. Divide the cubic feet value by 27 to convert it to cubic yards. The volume of a cubic yard of sand will cover about 30 square meters (about 324 square feet (ca. 30 m²)).
